There are two pathways that lead to Board Certification by the American Board of General Practice. These pathways are the Previous Experience Pathway and the Standard Primary Pathway. The Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice requires the completion of the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine. The Previous Experience Pathway does not require the completion of the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine.
What is the American Board of General Practice? The American Board of General Practice is an IRS-Recognized 501c6 non-profit organization. The American Board of General Practice conducts evaluations and examinations of physicians who request to be evaluated and examined by submitting applications to the American Board of General Practice. The American Board of General Practice issues awards of certification to those physicians who meet the standards of the American Board of General Practice by passing its examinations and fulfilling other requirements. The American Academy of General Physicians, which is a non-profit professional society of physicians, accredits and recognizes the American Board of General Practice ( ABGP ) as the board that certifies excellence in the general practice of medicine and surgery.
Under the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice, the American Board of General Practice utilizes, as an educational program, the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine.

The Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice utilizes a prospective approach to examining and evaluating a physician. In other words, so long as a physician has an unrestricted license to practice medicine in a state, district or territory of the United States, the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice does not take into account anything the physician did previously. Under the pathway of the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice, the American Board of General Practice is concerned only with how a physician performs in the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine.
A physician, who is proceeding down the Standard Primary Pathway is still permitted, if he/she desires to do so, to also proceed down the Previous Experience Pathway of the Amerian Board of General Practice. Many physicians decide to proceed down both pathways. One reason these physicians decide to proceed down both pathways is because they desire to rapidly obtain board certification. The Previous Experience Pathway of the American Board of General Practice provides a way for physicians to rapidly obtain board certification by the American Board of General Practice.
The initial application of the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice is the Application for Board Eligible Status under the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice. This application also must be submitted under the Previous Experience Pathway of the American Board of General Practice. An application, prior to submitting this application should read and understand the Explanation of Requirements for Board Eligible Status under the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice. To assist applicants, there is a Diagrammatic Summary of the Explanation of Requirements that can be obtained from the American Board of General Practice. This Diagrammatic Summary helps to understand the Explanation of Requirements.
The Explanation of Requirements for Board Eligible Status under the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice describes the various levels of Board Eligible Status. There is a different basis for each level of Board Eligible Status under the Standard Primary Pathway of the American Board of General Practice. These include a beginning basis, a protem basis, an interim basis and a constructed basis. There are different requirements for each level. Generally, the requirements include the completion of certain parts of the General Practice Training Program of the American College of General Medicine.
